G.A.P. Volunteer Spotlights
Nancy Read • (September 4th, 2024) When Nancy Read and her husband moved to Gravenhurst over four years ago, they wanted to be connected with the community. She says, “I read about G.A.P. and was so impressed with the great work they were doing, I knew I wanted to get involved. We love this area and wanted to give back to this wonderful community.”
Nancy’s volunteer work is primarily at the Thursday Food Program, where she is part of the team filling up the food hampers to be delivered to neighbours in need. She comments, “When I started with G.A.P. I was immediately inspired by the kind, caring, and passionate volunteers. Everyone works so well together like a well-oiled machine.” Nancy highlights that she looks forward to going in each week and is grateful to have made some wonderful new friends, “We laugh, we share, it’s a very therapeutic and uplifting experience.” When asked what the work G.A.P. is doing, means to her, personally, Nancy responds, “The work G.A.P. is doing is incredible. They have wonderful programs and are helping so many neighbours in the community. I have lived a very blessed life and it makes me feel good to know that even in a small way, I am helping someone else who may be struggling. Helping others through adversity can actually help you.” Nancy encourages others to consider volunteering for G.A.P., “If you are looking to meet more people in this community, meet like-minded people, feel good about yourself while doing good, I highly recommend joining the G.A.P. team. There are many ways you can help.” Nancy, we are so grateful to have enthusiastic volunteers like yourself who not only give time and effort to the work, but also want others to experience the community spirit that is shared at G.A.P. Thank you for expressing it so beautifully! * Photo credit to Nancy’s husband, Greg Poole, who is fundraising for G.A.P. by running weekly photography workshops (by donation) throughout the summer. |
Rhys Kraft • (August 28th, 2024) Rhys Kraft brings a magnetic energy and unique perspective to his volunteer role. Here, he describes in his own words, what led him to G.A.P. and what his volunteer experiences mean to him:
“After spending a few years in the Muskoka area, my family moved to Gravenhurst last summer and I was looking for ways to get involved in my new community. I came across G.A.P.’s website and was impressed by the diversity of services offered through G.A.P., and I wanted to be a part of this positive change. Even in a beautiful place like Muskoka, it can be hard to find secure housing and afford to live here, which is why I feel compelled to help out our neighbours in need. I enjoy my different roles that vary throughout the day/week, as I split my time working with the kitchen team and our Tuesday food program. G.A.P. is very accommodating which gives me the flexibility to help out wherever I can. We also have receptive and engaging leaders who are always looking for new ways to improve on what we do, and I feel heard when voicing my opinion. Finally, I am proud of how G.A.P. works to form relationships with everyone in the program. On Tuesdays we have shared meals where all our volunteers and neighbours can sit down together, and this creates a strong sense of community and shared identity. I get to catch up with our regular group, make new friends, and connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. I appreciate how G.A.P. sees the problems facing our community as interconnected and works through multiple streams to address them in a realistic, sustainable way. It’s amazing to see how our partnerships with local grocery stores, restaurants, taxi services, farmers, and nearby food banks can amplify our ability to help our neighbours and the community as a whole. I’m inspired every day by the stories of determination and resilience that I hear from our neighbours, and this motivates me to keep working to make G.A.P.’s mission a reality. It is truly a privilege to work with such a thoughtful and caring group of people. I’m proud to be part of such an amazing team and of all the great work done at G.A.P.!” Rhys, we appreciate you sharing these thoughts – your kind-hearted attitude is so encouraging and benefits the whole G.A.P. team. Thank you for caring deeply about our neighbours in need and for connecting with them in a meaningful way. Your volunteer work is making a difference. We wish you all the best as you head off to medical school! |
Liz Palatics • (August 21st, 2024) Liz Palatics has been a Gravenhurst summer resident for over 25 years. During that time, she served as a volunteer in Toronto with the Daily Food Bank. She explains, “When my children grew up and were only visiting on weekends, it became evident it was time for me to find ways to help in this fantastic community of Gravenhurst.” Referring to her experience at the Toronto food bank, she adds, “I am well aware of the issue of food insecurity for all our neighbours. It is up to us summer residents to be doing our part to help with those in need in the town of Gravenhurst as well.”
For the past two summers, Liz has volunteered at G.A.P.’s Thursday Food Program. Her positive and cooperative attitude radiates to her team members. When asked to comment on her personal experience as a G.A.P. volunteer, she says emphatically, “I have been so impressed with the volunteer brigade at G.A.P.!! What an amazing group of people doing an amazing job. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and participating in their enthusiasm. It really is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer.” Liz is mindful of the need for year-round volunteers to take a break and comments, “I hope that with my dedication during the summer weeks that maybe some of the full-time volunteers can take a well deserved week or two off during the summer.” How lucky are we to have such a thoughtful reason for someone to give their time and effort to helping others! Thank you Liz, for your wonderful affection and commitment to your summer home. |
Teresa Overbeek • (August 14th, 2024) “It’s a good feeling when I can make a difference in someone else’s life,” says G.A.P. volunteer, Teresa Overbeek.
Being a volunteer for the past few years has been a personal commitment for Teresa. She remarks, “I feel that I should give back to society because I have been so blessed in my life to just go out and buy whatever I need and not worry where the money will come from.“ Teresa is an enthusiastic member of the weekly G.A.P. food team and works so positively with others. She sees this experience as an opportunity to be with some wonderful people who have the same goal as she does. In her words, “The goal is to help people less fortunate than us, and hopefully make a big difference in their life." When asked how she got started with G.A.P., she explains, “After walking in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising event, I heard so many stories about what G.A.P. is doing for our neighbours, that I decided to volunteer.” Teresa, we are very grateful you made that decision and we appreciate all that you do for Gravenhurst Against Poverty. We are encouraged by your wish to make a difference in someone else’s life and are confident that that is exactly what you are doing. Thank you for your effort and your kindness to the Gravenhurst community! |
Kathy Castell • (August 7th, 2024) Kathy Castell is an enthusiastic volunteer who gives her time at the G.A.P. booth every Wednesday at the Gravenhurst Farmers' Market. With a welcoming smile, she greets people as they arrive and offers them free tea or coffee while they visit the market.
For those who have questions, she is happy to share about G.A.P.’s purpose and the various programs it offers. Kathy is also a regular volunteer in the food program, helping the kitchen team with meal preparation for those in need. As well, she helps out with the Thursday food distribution. She explains how she connected to G.A.P.: "After moving to the Gravenhurst area, I wanted to find a way to give back. Having been on the receiving end of help, I know how important it is to the people of our community. A friend mentioned G.A.P., and after some research, I knew it was the place for me.” Studies have shown that there are many benefits to volunteering. Kathy describes her positives in this way: “I feel I am getting more than I am giving. I enjoy interacting with our neighbours and knowing that a smile can go a long way. It has been an extraordinary experience for me. I’ve met so many wonderful people. I enjoy the work I do and look forward to many more years volunteering.” Kathy, our spirits are raised by your enthusiasm and your compassion for the volunteer work that you do. Your personal contribution is valuable to our neighbours as well as to the whole volunteer team. We are truly grateful for your ongoing commitment! |
Lanny Macleod • (July 31st, 2024) Lanny Macleod’s expertise as a chef at the Taboo Muskoka Resort doesn’t stop there. For over a year now he has also been a volunteer chef for Gravenhurst AGainst Poverty. Every Monday morning, he prepares a delicious homemade soup that is served either at the Tuesday Fresh Meal Day or the Wednesday Drop-In Soup Lunch.
Lanny was first encouraged to get involved with G.A.P. by Taboo operations manager, Lori Reynolds. Later, he met Beth Houston at a Gravenhurst Chamber After-Hours event and they discussed the soup idea. About his volunteer experience, he remarks, “It is fun to play around using a black box.” When asked to explain what this means, Lanny refers to the interview/hiring process for chefs, where they are presented with the challenge of a mystery box of ingredients to create a winning dish. When he arrives at G.A.P. on Mondays, Lanny never knows what ingredients will be there for soup-making. Sometimes the Food Lead, Marie Little, will have something set aside for him but more often, he looks in the fridges and peruses the dry storage area to decide on what he will put together. With the variety of donated food, he has made mushroom soup, chorizo sausage tomato, curry chicken, and “kitchen sink soup” (a.k.a. minestrone), to name a few. When asked how he benefits personally from his volunteer experience, Lanny says, “It is good to have a place in the community which is significant in a small town like Gravenhurst. I love the great feedback about my soups. People come up to me and say how delicious it is.” Lanny, how fortunate we are to have your culinary skills working to provide tasty, wholesome soup every week to our neighbours. We extend a huge thank you for so generously giving your time and talent to support the Gravenhurst community. |
Barbara McNeice Stallard • (July 24th, 2024) As educational researchers and planners, Barbara and her husband (Claire) spent years planning their retirement. They chose to move from California to Gravenhurst where her family has lived since the late 1800's. Describing herself as an introvert with a “wee bit of a need for socializing,” Barbara sought an opportunity that would feed her soul while helping others.
In her words, “I spent months online stalking (legally!) several volunteer opportunities in Gravenhurst. The deal was closed when my family gave G.A.P. positive reviews and especially when I connected with the then Chair of G.A.P., Bonnie Dart. In our discussions, it became clear that I could help G.A.P. in many different ways. I was sold!” Since joining the G.A.P. Team, Barbara has made remarkable contributions. Her volunteering experience has included leading the creation of G.A.P.’s most recent Strategic Plan and helping with the extensive Volunteer Satisfaction Survey. In her role as the Secretary for the G.A.P. Chair, Board of Directors, and the Management Committee, she has used her integrated planning and leadership skills to support the exceptional work that the volunteers do in their programs. She adds, “In the end, I enjoy knowing that I'm helping our neighbours so they can keep helping themselves achieve their goals.” In describing what the work means to her personally, Barbara explains, “While not comparable to what our neighbours are experiencing, personally I've experienced one day of food insecurity. I remember how ashamed I felt and how I didn't ask for help. I never want anyone else to experience a lack of resources that they need to contribute to their own well-being and that of their family, and their community. I strongly believe that our G.A.P. work does make short-term and long-term differences in many people's lives and their impact on the community. We give more than food, transportation, and wellness, we give them resources and we connect them with other services in the community to help them help themselves.” Barbara speaks passionately about the importance of understanding the depth of poverty, stating, “I've heard others say that G.A.P.'s neighbours should just get a job, don't really need our services, and other negative comments. It is important to step back and really think about the scenarios that might be happening with different people in different situations. Who are we to judge others? How would you do if your life dramatically changed and you were now in need of many of these 11 resources: financial, physical, social connection, mental, emotional, spiritual, relationships/role models, integrity trust, language, knowledge of hidden rules, motivation, and persistence. For my one-day experience, I know that I was unsteady at best.” Barbara, thank you for your strong belief in what G.A.P. is doing and for sharing your valuable insight based on your personal volunteer experience. Most of all, thank you for generously giving your time, effort, and unique talents to support the Gravenhurst community. We are glad your soul is being fed! ---- Barbara’s 2-year term as G.A.P. Secretary will be ending in April 2025. Perhaps this might be a new opportunity for you to feed your soul and help others? To apply, please contact: [email protected]. |
Melissa Mitchell • (July 17th, 2024) Melissa Mitchell began volunteering during the pandemic when G.A.P. hosted virtual YAC Hangouts. She would deliver snacks and/or activity supplies by car to the young people’s homes where they safely connected online with each other.
Now, Melissa interacts with the youth in person in G.A.P.'s YAC Space designed by the youth themselves. We are also very pleased to share that Melissa has recently assumed the shared role of YAC Program Coordinator along with fellow G.A.P. volunteer, Megan Davidson. Growing up, she was a ”little” in the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program and appreciated the value of that important and supportive relationship in her early life. As an adult, Melissa herself became a mentor in the BBBS program for many years. With the organization no longer being available in Muskoka, she was inspired to meaningfully connect with young people through the YAC Program. She describes her recent experience this way: “I have observed the youth build relationships, support each other, learn new activities, teach us all new things, and most of all, just be who they are.” Melissa appreciates being a caring mentor for young people in need while gaining knowledge and insight into the community, “I have a profound respect for grassroots organizations and the countless people who are committed to making our collective communities a more sustainable and safe place to live. I’ve had the privilege of meeting other volunteers who have a sincere dedication to G.A.P. and the work that they do. We have a team of strong, positive and ambitious people who are committed to seeing the YAC program thrive; this team inspires me every day.” She considers it a rewarding experience to be fostering positive relationships, as well as observing and engaging through creative activities: “YAC is a safe and fun place to attend, make connections with other youth, and to be expressive throughout the different activities that are organized by the volunteers.” Believing adolescents are the future, she humbly considers it a privilege to be a part of shaping it along with them. Melissa, we are inspired by your deep-rooted commitment to your volunteer work. The young people in our YAC Program are the lucky ones as they benefit from you sharing both your understanding and your compassion. We are truly grateful that you want to be there for each one of them. |
Megan Davidson • (July 10th, 2024) Megan is one of G.A.P.’s volunteer youth leaders working in the YAC Program. Along with others, she plans and attends the YAC Hangouts that take place on Friday nights from 6PM to 8PM. We are excited to announce that she and another youth leader, Melissa Mitchell, have just recently agreed to take on and share the role of YAC Program Coordinators.
Megan explains that she became a G.A.P. volunteer because she really enjoys helping and supporting her community, “I like knowing that I'm making a small amount of difference in other people's lives. I’ve known about G.A.P. for years, but I don’t think that I truly understood all the work, thought, and diversity that goes into all aspects of the organization. I’ve always known about the food programs, but the wellness pillar includes so much more and is always evolving.” Megan values the opportunity to meet people she might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet and to understand their stories better. She describes her experience, “Volunteering in the YAC program has been wonderful for me. Youth are not an age group that I’ve volunteered with before. It’s fun to plan out the nights and then watch all the kids come and enjoy themselves. It’s also fun to get to know the youth and think about events and activities they would like. So far my favourite night has been printmaking with the Library, but I’m very excited for all of the summer activities that we have planned.” Megan, we are grateful for your vital contribution to the YAC program. We know that the young people appreciate your calm and accepting manner and the interest you take in each one of them. Thank you for being there for them, ensuring that they can make positive social connections in a safe and caring space. |
Brenda Beatty • (July 3rd, 2024) Brenda Beatty has generously volunteered for G.A.P. in several areas. When asked about her experience, she shared the following stories:
“I was moved to connect with G.A.P. by the ‘Ignite’ evening at the Opera House, designed to “enlighten, inspire and engage” the audience about happenings around town, and inspire me, that evening did! I was particularly taken with the experience of connecting with Bonnie Dart and Kelly Jones about the Circles initiative, which, as I later learned, G.A.P. supports by providing the Circles’ pre-meeting meal offered at the Trinity United Church. Following on from that evening, my real initiation at G.A.P. occurred one Thursday morning, when, having wandered in to offer my help, I was promptly led to the egg distribution commercial kitchen site. There I joined two others and the three of us worked madly to repackage dozens of eggs into half-dozen cartons. Following this experience - that felt at times like being Lucy or Ethel at the chocolate factory ;-) - Linda Harrison gave me her inimitable introduction to all of the G.A.P. pillars via Bryan White’s colourful posters in the hall, and then I segued into the big room to distribute potatoes, carrots, and bread to the then 250 or so hampers. What an experience! Three hours after I dropped in to help, boy I was pooped. But I was also hooked! Since that fateful Thursday, I have pitched in on several more Thursday morning extravaganzas, but I haven’t had to do the eggs again. The next time it was dog and cat food repackaging, and another time manning the hamper fillings in the ‘pickup room’ and another time, back out on the floor in the big room. You really have to see the Thursday morning process to believe it. It’s impressive. And it’s fun to be part of such focused functional teamwork. I have also found myself singing and playing at the 2023 Garden Party, followed by weeding, digging in bags of manure, planting, watering, and harvesting at the GHS and GPS G.A.P. garden sites with their eleven raised beds. A bountiful crop resulted from the excellent teamwork there last year with Sarah Meyers as our lead overseer and Brenda Gabitous as our site-specific coach. Lots of fun and satisfaction were had by all and we are well back into it again this year. It is another valuable experience to have become part of the kitchen crew at G.A.P.. I have enjoyed preparing the plant-based Wednesday night Circles meals with Chris Brew and Elaine Robbins, and have been glad to help Frances Garner with the Friday Community Kitchen initiative, where neighbours get the chance to learn the ropes of cost-effective healthy meal preparation. During our holidays at the family cottage last summer, my partner Chris Brew and I enjoyed applying our Volunteer Survey Committee team’s guidance and direction to develop a full draft of proposed items for the volunteer survey. After much more consultation with our team members, the final version was born. Having both retired from academia only a few years before, it felt good to put our skills back to work for such a good cause. Clearly with so many people finding themselves in need on so many levels, Gravenhurst has found itself just one of so many neighbourhoods around the province, the country, and for that matter, the world, where people are struggling. Being able to do something to help fill that gap, is a privilege. It is deeply satisfying to be part of such a dedicated group of caring, collaborative, and meaningfully contributing citizens.” Brenda, thank you for describing these wonderful volunteer experiences and for sharing what G.A.P. means to you, personally. We are truly fortunate to have your unique talents and skills making such a valuable contribution to the organization. Thank you for your great enthusiasm and for everything that you do for G.A.P.! |
Esther McLaren • (June 26th, 2024) For Esther, volunteering is a family affair. It was her daughter-in-law, Christina, who encouraged her to join the G.A.P. team, confident that she would enjoy working with the other volunteers. Confirming this benefit, Esther says, “I have made new friends and reconnected with some old friends as well.”
She is impressed with how much G.A.P. benefits our community and appreciates the thought that someone will not go to bed hungry. Further emphasizing how glad she is that those in need are being helped, she shares her personal philosophy about volunteering, “Time spent helping others is never wasted.” Esther, we are grateful for your weekly commitment to helping out on the Thursday Food Day. Your team spirit is a reminder to all of us that being part of a community means that we support one another. You do it humbly, without looking for recognition but we want to take this moment to spotlight your efforts in celebration of how it accomplishes G.A.P.’s purpose. Thank you! |
April Humphries • (June 19th, 2024) April loves to volunteer her time for the benefit of others. Even though she works full-time, she still makes herself available to a few helping organizations - and G.A.P. is very fortunate to be one of them!
For 2 years, April has worked as a volunteer route marshal at our Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event. She has been a food hamper delivery driver for our Thursday program and she has also been a greeter at the G.A.P. Booth at the Wednesday Farmers Market. We are pleased to announce that April is now joining G.A.P.’s Management Team as our volunteer Wellness Program Lead. This program includes the Tuesday all-ages Art drop-in, the Wednesday Coffee Social, and the Friday YAC Hangouts for youth. April loves to meet and interact with people so we are confident she will make a valuable contribution to G.A.P.’s wellness initiatives and maybe start a few more! Thank you, April, for all that you do as a volunteer. We are very grateful that you are taking on this new role. Your compassion and positivity are such welcome gifts to G.A.P. and to all of the individuals it serves! |
Susanne Collins • (June 12th, 2024) Susanne Collins is the volunteer Coordinator for G.A.P.’s Tuesday Food Program. She is no stranger to not-for-profit work, with years of experience, most recently, with United Way Simcoe Muskoka. We are pleased to announce that she has also just taken a position on our Management Team leading our new Finance Committee.
After she and her husband retired and moved to their cottage full-time, they wanted to have direct involvement within the Gravenhurst community, “Meeting and getting to know our neighbours and helping them in their time of need was exactly what I was looking for.” Susanne describes the positive impact that we can have on each other, “Volunteering at G.A.P. has also helped me feel part of the community. I have made several new friends.” She recognizes many of the G.A.P. volunteers and neighbours whenever she is in town, and notes that, “G.A.P. is definitely the heart of Gravenhurst!” She adds how proud she is to be a part of the work being done, “…seeing our volunteers work tirelessly to help our neighbours in need is incredible. Then if you consider the rescue food helping our environment and the kids’ programs supporting future generations, it is truly an example of a successful grassroots effort. I'm honoured to be part of this group. Most importantly, every time I come in to G.A.P. and interact with everyone there I am reminded how important kindness is and what a difference it makes to every situation!” Susanne, we are truly grateful for all of the expertise that you bring with you to Gravenhurst Against Poverty. We thank you for your enthusiasm, your encouragement and your generous heart. |
Samantha Ennest • (June 5th, 2024) Samantha Ennest has a lot of experience working with people. Formerly with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, she now works at the Literacy Society of South Muskoka. She says she became a G.A.P. volunteer in part, to strengthen the connection between G.A.P. and the Literacy Society but also adds, “…in part, because I have a deep appreciation for the grassroots, heartfelt approach G.A.P. applies to being there for all the people in our community.” Every Tuesday Samantha volunteers at G.A.P.’s food program, interacting compassionately with the neighbours who drop in. Reflecting on her volunteer experience, she says, “ Being a volunteer at G.A.P. has provided me with amazing opportunities to connect with members of our community. There is a deep sense of cohesion and togetherness within the team and amongst the neighbours we see each week. It’s delightful to share time and conversation with so many folks who also call Gravenhurst home.“
When asked what the work G.A.P. is doing means to her, Sam says, “The work G.A.P. is doing speaks directly to my soul as I know how very hard it is to manage life challenges when there aren’t enough resources to meet the needs in a family. I deeply wish for a world where all people have enough and G.A.P. is trying really hard to help see the way forward to reduce the effects of poverty in our community.” Sam urges anyone who has even an hour each week to consider inquiring about the opportunities available for volunteering. Samantha, we extend a warm thank you for your generosity of time, and your deep commitment to the work you are doing. We see how much our neighbours appreciate your kindness and we do too! |
Louise Cote • (May 29th, 2024) Meet Louise Cote. Her personality is as vibrant as the expression on her face. She volunteers her time every Tuesday to assist with distributing food to our G.A.P. neighbours. Her kind and welcoming manner is appreciated by all.
Louise moved from the city to Muskoka two years ago. “I was looking for a volunteer opportunity and googled it.” She says she was also looking for a way to meet new people and help out at the same time. Newly retired when she first moved, she found herself in a small community at the tail end of Covid. “We took on a large renovation that actually lasted a year. G.A.P. gave me a sense of normalcy.” Louise describes how surprised she was at the great need here in Muskoka, “Everyone talks about how great and rich Muskoka is.” Louise, we are grateful that you have joined our community and that your warm compassion for others is felt by our G.A.P. neighbours. Thank you for your weekly commitment and for being such a vital part of the G.A.P. Team! |
Brenda Whiteside • (May 22nd, 2024) We are pleased to announce Brenda Whiteside as G.A.P.’s new Volunteer Management Lead. She brings energy and enthusiasm and loves to work with people, making her a perfect fit for the role. Some of G.A.P.'s newest volunteers would have recently received their orientation from her. Brenda has been surprised by the large number of people who volunteer their time. “Their sense of gratitude and desire to contribute is inspiring.”
When she moved to Gravenhurst, Brenda wanted to volunteer with an organization that was working directly with individuals who were struggling and needed a bit of support. “I had picked up a brochure about G.A.P. at the market and was impressed. I did some research and was even more impressed. During orientation, I knew this was the place for me.” You may have met Brenda last summer when she, in fact, volunteered as a greeter in the G.A.P. booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers Market. In describing what G.A.P.’s work means to her, Brenda says, “I have been so blessed in my life - good family, good health, financially sound. I realize so much of my success stems from being born into a middle-class loving family that provided me with everything needed to succeed. Working at G.A.P. helps me in some small way to provide a little bit of that extra to those who were not as fortunate.” She adds, “I am humbled every day by the interactions I have with neighbours. They constantly display courage, a positive spirit, and a desire to succeed.” Brenda, we extend a warm welcome to you in your new role and deeply thank you for your contribution to the G.A.P. team. Your motivation to support struggling individuals is such an encouragement to us! Thank you for generously sharing your heart and your time. |
Chris Brew • (May 15th, 2024) Chris Brew is a well-respected G.A.P. volunteer who shares her talent and skills in several areas. She had first become aware of G.A.P.’s work in the community, personally donating funds and useful equipment to support it. Later, she was drawn to become a volunteer after speaking to another volunteer at G.A.P.'s Booth at the Farmers Market, “It was quite refreshing; there was no pressure to get involved, just the opportunity to have a cuppa and a chat. Soon after I got tapped on the shoulder by a friend who had recently become involved.”
Chris eventually joined because she had knowledge and skills that were no longer being utilized in her retirement and she was glad to offer them to her community. She was immediately inspired, “The Thursday morning food distribution process has to be experienced to comprehend the enormity of what is achieved in such a short amount of time by just a few people every week. It reminds me of how a few people when working collaboratively can achieve so much and have some fun in the process.” Chris has also enjoyed being an ambassador for G.A.P. at the Farmers’ Market, being part of the G.A.P. gardens project – gratified to be providing fresh food free of pesticides, supporting the Friday Community Kitchen plant-based course, and helping out with the food preparation for the Wednesday Muskoka Circles group. She was also an integral part of the research group to develop and implement the recent volunteer satisfaction/feedback survey describing it as a great opportunity for her to use her professional skills. When asked if there are positive benefits to becoming a G.A.P. volunteer, Chris responds, “A sense of membership to a deeply caring community group cannot be underestimated. Having lived in poverty as a child, I understand the importance of maintaining dignity through charity, and I think G.A.P. does that well. Meeting interesting members of the community who I would not have met otherwise has also been a major plus.” She adds that G.A.P. offers a range of interesting opportunities for you to assist your wider community and your support is valued and appreciated. Chris, thank you for the incredible, positive impact you have had on the G.A.P. volunteer team. We are honoured to shine a bright light of recognition and appreciation on all that you are doing to make a difference in your community. |
Linda Harrison • (May 8th, 2024) Linda Harrison is a long-time G.A.P. volunteer who is well-known for her warmhearted personality. Starting with the Food Program, she graduated to the role of Thursday Food Coordinator and began serving on the G.A.P. Steering Committee. She then went on to serve as the G.A.P. Volunteer Management Lead, welcoming and matching new volunteers to tasks, organizing training, and ensuring that all of the essential roles were filled. She tried to make sure each volunteer was happy in their role. Linda has recently stepped back from this lead position but will be remaining in a support role alongside Brenda Whiteside.
Linda first became connected with G.A.P. in 2019 when Joanne and John Twist asked her to join their walking team for the CNOY event, “At that time I was looking for an opportunity to volunteer and Joanne suggested that I come in and see what was happening at G.A.P.. I soon realized what an amazing organization this was and that I wanted to be part of it.” Linda adds that G.A.P. has taught her a lot about the tremendous needs in the community as well as the caring and generous response to those needs, “So many people volunteer their time and talents, some support us financially and others provide encouragement and appreciation. The generosity of this community is demonstrated at our Coldest Night Of The Year fundraiser where every year, Gravenhurst is consistently number 1 across the country, in donations per capita.” Linda describes her growing realization that many in our community did not have someone to give them a pat on the back, a hug on a tough day, or to ask them how they were doing, “What really brought this to my attention was when someone was asked who could be contacted in case of an emergency. The response was ‘I don’t have any family or friends’. G.A.P. is attempting to fulfill some of those needs.” When asked what G.A.P. means to her personally, Linda responds, “G.A.P. truly gives me more than I give back. I have met so many wonderful people and made great friends. I am grateful that I can make a difference in some small way, in the lives of others in our community. To me, G.A.P. is a place that not only provides free food but also free hugs for those in need.” Linda, we are grateful for all that you have given and continue to give to G.A.P. and our neighbours! Thank you for your positive spirit that encourages and reminds us all that we are meaningfully connected to each other. |
Kim Allsopp • (May 1st, 2024) Kim Allsopp is a valued member of the G.A.P. team who “runs” hampers full of food out to the delivery vehicles every Thursday.
When we communicated with him about his volunteer experience, he had the following to say: “Since I don’t actually live in Gravenhurst, I was unaware of the good things that G.A.P. was doing for the community until a member of the Knox Presbyterian congregation (Sheila McNeice) told me about the organization. For some time, I have been donating squash and other vegetables to the Salvation Army and the Manna Food Bank in Bracebridge. I knew how important food banks were in Muskoka and decided I had the time and desire to play a more active role in helping a significant number of my fellow citizens. I was a teacher for forty years at Gravenhurst High School and Georgian College; I found it rewarding and satisfying to help my students achieve their goals. I like to help people and I am grateful to G.A.P. for giving me the opportunity to scratch this particular itch. In January of 2023, I began my G.A.P. career stuffing hampers alongside a group of high-spirited and intensely professional women. While showing me the ropes, they displayed great patience when I messed up by giving everyone two bananas instead of the requisite one banana per two people. Dave thought that my strengths might lie elsewhere so I was placed in charge of egg carton disassembly which I mastered in a few short weeks. Finally, I was promoted to the runner department. While under the tutelage of Bruce and Paul, I think I’ve found my niche as a useful member of G.A.P.. I look forward to my Thursday afternoon shift every week. The commitment and professionalism of all G.A.P. personnel continues to amaze me. Sometimes it’s hard to be an optimist in 2024. G.A.P. gives us all hope for the future.” Kim, thank you for sharing your story. We are grateful that you have found your “niche” with Gravenhurst Against Poverty. What you are doing by putting in your ongoing and committed effort, is in fact, making the work lighter for the whole team. That means a lot to us. We are honoured to shine a bright light on your generous contribution toward helping others in the community. |
Don Reynolds • (April 24th, 2024) For years, Don Reynolds has been a volunteer on G.A.P.’s Food Rescue Team. Every week the team picks up surplus food that is donated from various businesses in or out of town. The food is transported to G.A.P. for distribution to our neighbours. It is physical work that requires repetitively carrying heavy boxes of food down the stairs and heading back up again to get more. Don selflessly does it with a positive attitude and always a friendly comment. He is easy to be around and adds to the feel-good atmosphere that attracts so many volunteers to G.A.P. Don has also been our go-to handyman, a great problem-solver too, offering helpful suggestions when asked for advice. His encouragement and humour are appreciated by everyone.
Don, we are grateful for your generous contribution to the cause of helping neighbours in need. We are delighted to shine a bright light of recognition on your part in making us strong together. |
Wilma Campbell • (April 17th, 2024) Wilma Campbell has been a G.A.P. food delivery driver for over a year now. She has always wanted to do volunteer work and considers this to be such a good cause, “It’s a great opportunity for me to make someone feel good. I know every one of the neighbours that I deliver to and it gives me a chance to check in on them, have a chat, and see how they are doing.”
Wilma has two friends who join her every week. Lynn Hill acts as her navigator/helper on the delivery route and will fill in as a driver when Wilma goes on vacation. Her dog, Sandy, rounds out the G.A.P. delivery team. Wilma says, “She (Sandy) knows when it’s Thursday - it’s when she gets to see a bunch of people whom she loves. Sandy’s good therapy for some of the older neighbours, in particular, who like to see her.” In describing what G.A.P. means to her personally, Wilma explains how much she enjoys getting out to do her volunteer work, “ It gives me real satisfaction to know I am helping others who don’t have the ability or an available vehicle to pick up the food they need.” Wilma, we want to extend a sincere thank-you to you - and to Lynn & Sandy - for your generous community spirit! It is inspiring to see how much helping others means to you. |
Alex Kavanagh • (April 10th, 2024) Alex is well known by all of the young people who attend G.A.P.’s YAC Hangouts. He has been volunteering as a youth leader at every event for over a year. He first heard about G.A.P. from his mother, “Once I looked on the website and saw everything that G.A.P. does for the community, I wanted to help out as well.”
His first YAC Hangout was a music activity that he really enjoyed and he has been helping ever since. Alex feels that the YAC program is pretty important, stating, “It’s a safe place where young people can have fun and play games. It’s an opportunity to make friends and learn new skills with all of the events we plan for them.” He describes how beneficial it is to have special guests who come in to share their expertise with the kids, “Whether it’s painting peace poles, making polymer clay figures, creating ornaments, cooking in the kitchen, or playing music, it is a lot of fun for the youth and fun for the volunteers to join in.“ Alex says that community spirit is important to him and that it is one of the personal benefits of being a volunteer. Besides working full-time and being a regular volunteer for G.A.P., Alex is also a volunteer firefighter for the Gravenhurst Fire Department. Alex, thank you for all that you contribute to the community and in particular, to the young people who see you as a strong role model who cares for others. We are so lucky to have you as a G.A.P. volunteer! |
Tom Hall • (April 3rd, 2024) Tom Hall was introduced to G.A.P. by another active volunteer, Dr. Ardyn Todd. Ardyn encouraged Tom to attend an orientation meeting about all of G.A.P.’s activities. Beth Houston suggested he consider working with Bruce Dart in the food delivery program and that is where he has been volunteering for nearly 2 years.
Tom notes that he had little experience as a volunteer. His career, family, and very active lifestyle kept him busy, but as a retired person he felt it was time to shift his focus to giving to others as a new pursuit. He comments, “As a volunteer driver, I have the privilege to represent G.A.P. and directly meet our neighbours in the community that need the support that G.A.P. provides. I proudly wear the GAP T-shirt or hat when I’m on duty. I approach each and every neighbour that I meet with a smile and ask how their day is going. The neighbours that G.A.P. serves each has their own special story; many are stories of misfortune, bad luck, or other life problems. I actively listen to them and provide encouragement when appropriate.” Tom maintains that there is a personal bonus to volunteering, “I benefit from hearing their thanks and experiencing the heartfelt gratitude they have for G.A.P. and the food delivery program.” He notes that he has been blessed with good fortune in his life. Meeting neighbours at the door to their homes has opened his eyes to the needs of others. Tom describes how rewarding it is to serve as a volunteer for G.A.P., “While my contribution is small, I am appreciated for what I do and believe that other volunteers will feel the same way.” Tom, we know how much you care about the individuals you are serving. We want to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on your strong commitment and compassion. Thank you for sharing what you value about being a volunteer and a huge thank you for all that you are doing to help your neighbours. |
Sandra Holdsworth • (March 27th, 2024) In January 2020, just after her father’s passing, Sandra Holdsworth dropped off some clothing in Newmarket and saw a poster advertising the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event. A month later, she attended Ignite Gravenhurst and heard Joanne Twist speak about G.A.P. and the CNOY event happening in Gravenhurst. Sandra says, “My father was always willing to help others and I followed in his footsteps. I took this as a sign to get involved locally in my community, so I registered to volunteer at my first CNOY event. Once Covid happened, and due to my compromised immune system, being a liver transplant recipient, I took on G.A.P. roles behind the scenes.”
As G.A.P.’s Communication Assistant, Sandra manages the Mailchimp database, sets up Zoom meetings, and works with Bryan White (G.A.P. Social Media Manager) to produce the monthly G.A.P. Newsletter, ‘In the Loop,’ and the recently published volunteer newsletter, ‘G.A.P. Rap’. She also manages the ongoing volunteer applications received through the website. Sandra says volunteering helps her connect and become friends with people in her community, “It’s something I’m proud to be a part of. I’m in awe of how our community comes together to aid our neighbours and provide a warm, welcoming, safe environment for people of all ages. It is very rewarding, and connects you to an amazing group of people who make you feel part of a family.” Sandra, we are so proud to have you on the G.A.P. team of dedicated volunteers. We appreciate the support you have provided in your various roles. A huge thank you for sharing your skills, time, and effort to help others. |
John Twist • (March 20th, 2024) John Twist started volunteering at the very beginning of G.A.P., to support his wife Joanne, who was one of the founding members. Many times she needed a “volunteer” for this and that, and he gladly obliged. It involved sitting on the first G.A.P. Advisory Committee as a person with professional mental health experience, washing dishes for the Tuesday lunches, helping prepare those lunches, helping bag food for the Tuesday pickups, helping with the Thursday suppers, picking up food donations from the local grocers, and eventually co-ordinating the Tuesday food program. Looking back, he recalls,
“I well remember the early days of COVID when we would put out food on tables in the parking lot for our neighbours - rain or shine. Later, I delivered meals on Thursdays.” In the past 2 years, John has been more involved with the administrative side of things, and is a member of the G.A.P. Board of Directors. He still delivers food to neighbours in need. He describes how rewarding it is to be a volunteer, adding, “I feel I am helping continue the legacy of my wife Joanne, who was one of the most supportive and idealistic champions of the underdog I have ever known.” John feels G.A.P.’s work is vital in providing a lot of relief to people whose lives are severely challenged - economically, mentally, and socially. “People are in pain, and whether or not they brought it on themselves, they are still suffering in both a tangible and spiritual way”. John emphasizes that for people who want to volunteer where they can see and experience the impact of that volunteering, G.A.P. is for them, “With G.A.P. there is immediacy - you help your neighbour, and you can see, and even influence, what that help looks like. G.A.P. is grassroots, and grassroots volunteering can provide more “fodder for the soul” than a lot of other volunteering. With G.A.P. there is an opportunity to give money, raise money, and participate in how that money is spent.” John, we are so grateful for you continuing Joanne’s legacy and for creating quite a remarkable one of your own! |
Diane McCurdy & John Latour • (March 13th, 2024) Meet our versatile volunteers, Diane McCurdy and John Latour.
Diane started volunteering for G.A.P. when a neighbour invited her to drive for him, as he had to go back to his day job during COVID. Diane delivered meals for a few months and John soon joined her. As well, they both became involved in packing food. John also helped pick up and deliver donated or purchased food to G.A.P. for distribution. Diane’s expertise and interest in spreadsheet work drew her to preparing the driver sheets for hundreds of deliveries. Her volunteer work as both a driver and a food packer, helped her better understand the needs for the driver sheets. She enjoyed working with the volunteer office staff and her partner in spreadsheet production, Carol Aberdeen. Both John and Diane have been delighted to meet other people in the community who are also willing to lend a helping hand, adding, “More importantly, it has given us an opportunity to give back and help those less fortunate than us. We have felt so blessed to have learned more about the Town, and its people. The work that G.A.P. does, reaffirms our belief that Gravenhurst is a wonderful, inviting community. We often tell our friends that moving to Gravenhurst was like being pulled into a big warm hug.” In the summer, Diane & John spend more time talking to the individuals receiving food deliveries, learning about their gardens, their pets, their challenges, and their stories, “We have found that some of our neighbours were so happy to have someone to chat to. We have always returned from our delivery routes with smiles on our faces and in our hearts.” John and Diane, we want to give you a huge, warm hug of gratitude from G.A.P. for all you do for our community! |
Paul & Ingrid Van Schyndel • (March 6th, 2024) Paul and Ingrid Van Schyndel, who retired from their business in 2020, were looking to volunteer locally and heard that G.A.P. needed volunteers.
Both of them are now regulars on G.A.P.'s Thursday food distribution day. They are very appreciated by their team members for their welcoming attitude and conscientious work ethic. Paul and Ingrid find it personally rewarding to be a part of G.A.P.’s support effort. They comment that their volunteer experience makes them feel like they are a part of the community and that they are helping where there is a need, “It was an eye-opener to us about the amount of need there is out there in the community.” They both certainly encourage others to consider volunteering for G.A.P. In their words, “It is a large organization with many programs to support our neighbours in need. It is totally run by volunteers. The fact that G.A.P. has varied programs means your availability and area of specialty can be accommodated.” Paul and Ingrid, we are so fortunate to have volunteers like you giving your time and effort to help others. We thank you for being such lovely people to work with and for making our community a better place to live! |
Mel Lami • (February 28th, 2024) Mel Lami came along as a volunteer just when G.A.P. was trying to find a driver to transport food hampers to the Kilworthy area. The story goes that someone from G.A.P. was shopping and started a conversation with Mel at her workplace. They talked about individuals with limited transportation living in rural areas and not being able to get to G.A.P. for their food needs. Mel matter-of-factly offered herself as someone who could pick up food hampers on Thursday afternoons and deliver them on her way home from work. It seemed simple and logical to her. That was years ago and now, every Thursday, Mel comes to pick up and deliver food, after she has worked all day.
She may not see it as a big deal but we do and the same goes for those people who either don’t have a vehicle or can’t afford to put the extra gas in their car to drive in to town and back to Kilworthy. Thank you Mel for caring about those who need food and for delivering it to them every week. We are pleased to shine a spotlight on your volunteer work because it makes a truly valuable contribution to our community. |
Chris Davis • (February 7th, 2024) Chris Davis enjoys being able to help people. She explains, “I have been lucky in my life and career and want to share.” Her volunteering began back in 2017 with the Ryde Community Co-op. When she later learned about G.A.P. and its weekly food distribution to those in need, she decided that she wanted to assist with those deliveries.
Now, she arrives at G.A.P. every Thursday with a willing and positive attitude! Chris comments about the work that G.A.P. is doing and what it means to her, “An amazing number of meals and food boxes are prepared and delivered weekly. I see the smiles and hear the ‘thank you’s’ and that is why I do this.” She adds, “If you want to give back to your community here is a place to be. There are many activities you can get involved in and some amazing people to meet.” Chris, we are so grateful for your community spirit and your willingness to share your time to help others. Thank you for being a valued member of the G.A.P. volunteer team! |
Rob & Allyn Abbott • (January 31st, 2024) Rob and Allyn Abbott devote much of their time to volunteer work in the Gravenhurst community and beyond. When things need to get done, they have a very willing and practical approach to simply getting them done!
They are both connected to a number of helping organizations and G.A.P. has the very good fortune of being one of them. During the lockdown due to the global pandemic, Rob and Allyn volunteered every week at G.A.P. - packing food hampers for drivers to pick up and deliver. They would then load their own car to transport food to neighbours in need. Years later, they are still weekly volunteer drivers. They both tend to shy away from the spotlight when it comes to public recognition, but we are glad that they have allowed us to take a photo of them in action. Rob and Allyn, we are pleased to take this opportunity to thank you both for all that you do and for the light you bring to our community. |
Om Patel • (January 24th, 2024) Om Patel became a G.A.P. volunteer at a young age. His dad and brother brought him along to get involved. He really enjoyed helping out and being around the other volunteers. Looking back, he says, “They made me feel like I was part of the family.”
Currently, he does weekly deliveries after school with his “trusty partner, John Cooper.” Volunteering gives him satisfaction. “I get to make a difference…seeing the smiles on the people that I help, makes me know that the work that I do is helping others.” Om appreciates G.A.P.’s purpose, saying, “The work it is doing makes me feel that the community we are in, is unselfish. We go out of our daily lives to help those less fortunate than us and provide them with resources to get back up on their own two feet. We provide different programs for different needs.” Brimming with enthusiasm, Om adds, “You won’t find such a close-knit community anywhere else! The second you step inside the church, you will feel like family! Everybody is welcome at G.A.P.” Om, you have clearly described the feeling of worth that comes from connecting to your community and helping others. Every week, we appreciate your positive and cheerful personality contributing to the well-being of the team. Thank you for your years of volunteer service! |
Sarah Pegg • (January 17th, 2024) Sarah Pegg is a kind and helpful volunteer who works in the G.A.P. Office on Wednesday mornings. Some years ago she decided she wanted to be more connected and give back to her community. She explains, “A G.A.P. booth at a local event had a sign-up sheet if people were interested in volunteering. I signed up and began volunteering at the Tuesday luncheons.”
In addition, Sarah willingly took on some volunteer tasks at G.A.P.’s first Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser event. Reflecting on her experience, she has made a number of observations, “I feel that G.A.P. is addressing a growing need of food security in a non-judgemental way. It is about building community, inclusion and understanding from a place of gentle caring.” She recognizes how G.A.P. directly helps neighbours and promotes community members helping each other. Sarah, we thank you for wanting to be connected and for wanting to give back to your community. In helping others, your contribution is making a meaningful difference. We appreciate all that you do! |
David Minns • (January 10th, 2024) David Minns is the volunteer Food Program Lead for G.A.P. This is is a very large area of responsibility involving planning, organizing, and coordinating food that has been donated or purchased to be distributed to over 650 neighbours each week. Dave takes it all in stride with a positive attitude and an ever-calm approach.
His G.A.P. volunteer work began in 2019 when Ardyn Todd asked David to come with him to pick up some fruit and vegetables. He continued on the Food Rescue Team for a few years before becoming the Food Lead. He has also become a member of G.A.P.’s Steering Committee and Board of Directors. Dave says he was inspired to volunteer, based on seeing what the Kids Help Line and Breakfast Programs were doing. In addition to food, Dave has tech expertise which he is using as a Project Lead to improve G.A.P.’s communication networks. When asked how he benefits from volunteering, he answers, “It’s satisfying to know that I am helping with the well-being of a group of Gravenhurst residents.” He adds that it is important that an underserved demographic of our community knows that many others are continually helping them with some of the insecurities they experience. Dave values the breadth of services G.A.P. offers to the community, noting that there is always a spot where volunteer help will be appreciated. Dave, we are so lucky to have you on the volunteer team! We extend our humble thanks to you for the incredible contribution you are making to help others. |
Mark Clairmont • (January 3rd, 2024) Mark Clairmont grew up in Gravenhurst and is well-known for his gregarious personality. He is curious with a keen interest in regional news. His entertaining storytelling, both in person and through writing newspaper articles, has made him a local legend.
Mark has a love for Gravenhurst and the people who live in this community. Along with his fellow Rotarians, he supported G.A.P. in its early days and it was a natural fit for him to become a volunteer. He now delivers delivers food hampers on a weekly basis. When asked how his volunteer work benefits him, Mark says, “Nothing in it for me personally, besides the satisfaction of doing what’s right.” He adds that the work G.A.P. is doing keeps alive his belief in humankind. Mark, thank you for your ever-cheerful goodwill that reminds us that we are all neighbours helping one another where needed. We appreciate all that you do for Gravenhurst Against Poverty. |
Mandy Dart • (December 27th, 2023) Mandy Dart feels that delivering food is an extremely simple way to give back to the community she lives in. “I am lucky enough to have a vehicle and to never have experienced food insecurity in my life; delivering food periodically feels like the least I can do to honour my good fortune.”
She comments on being privileged and how it may limit one’s perspective, “Delivering food to neighbours allows me to remember those who have less… it’s doing a small but super important thing for them. It truly humbles me to see some of the living conditions of some neighbours. These glimpses into other realities allow me to empathize a little better and appreciate all my blessings that much more.” When asked about the work G.A.P. is doing, Mandy maintains that it directly addresses a huge need in our community without having to wait for red tape to be hacked through or decisions to be approved by a government body. In her view, “It allows people to see and recognize the disparity in our society and sends our neighbours a message that they are seen and their struggle is acknowledged and being responded to. Mandy adds, “It is remarkable and nearly unbelievable what G.A.P. has been able to accomplish in its 6 years. Having grown up in Gravenhurst and heard it bashed, at times, by those in surrounding areas that are more well off, I could not be prouder of what G.A.P. represents and what it models, day after day.” Mandy, thank you for sharing what you have learned from your experience as a G.A.P. volunteer. We are grateful that you see how much the work matters and we thank you for your heartfelt commitment to it! |
Peggyann Boudreau • (December 20th, 2023) Peggyann Boudreau is the friendly, efficient person who has been volunteering in the G.A.P. office for years. Always kind, she generates optimism and well-being for whoever calls or drops in. Empathy is her superpower; she’s like G.A.P.’s very own Wonder Woman!
Peggyann honours Joanne Twist for introducing her to G.A.P. Joanne emphasized to her how much her skills were needed by the organization. As treasurer, vice-chair, and lead of our transportation program, Peggyann has fearlessly ventured with us into uncharted territory. She has been a strong leader in helping to fulfill G.A.P.’s mission of reducing and relieving poverty in the community. Peggyann says that G.A.P. is where she found her Muskoka community. “Being able to contribute to the community in which you live is such a rewarding experience. Working alongside people who share your same ethic means you have found a true home.” She feels that G.A.P. has inspired a caring community that without judgement, understands the true value of its citizens. She adds, “Everyone has an equal value. I don’t know that I would want to live any other way.“ When asked why people should consider volunteering for G.A.P., Peggyann responds, “If you’ve ever wondered, how can I help, give G.A.P. a call. Not only can you share your talents, you will make a real difference in the lives around you.” Peggyann, we’re glad you made G.A.P. your home! We celebrate all that you do and thank you sincerely for your tireless commitment. |
Sarah Meyers • (December 13th, 2023) Sarah Meyers and her husband, Jim, were encouraged by their friends, Sue McKenzie and Len Ring, to join the G.A.P. team of volunteers. They all worked together at the G.A.P. Supper Club back in 2020. Sarah and Jim began delivering food hampers and still do to this day. Every Thursday, Sarah also helps fill those hampers in the Food Program. Additionally, Sarah is the G.A.P. Garden Coordinator working with over 20 volunteer gardeners who manage 45 G.A.P. vegetable garden boxes. She is a fabulous cheerleader in this role and keeps everyone informed during garden season about the bounty of fresh, luscious, veggies going into the food hampers for delivery.
Of all this volunteer work, Sarah says, “It keeps me active, busy, and on a schedule,” She adds, “It helps my heart to know I can do a wee bit to help others; it keeps Jim and I grateful for what we have. And we’ve added friends to our circle.” Noting that G.A.P. can’t do it all for people in need, Sarah is pleased that it offers some nourishing food and a social connection on a regular basis. She says, “I’ve watched some of our neighbours grow taller and more confident in our community, because of G.A.P.” Sarah considers G.A.P. the epitome of “grassroots,” pointing out that the care offered is immediate, tangible and direct to our neighbours in the community who need a hand up. She feels this is a very satisfying combination for potential volunteers. Sarah, we want to extend a huge thank you to both you and Jim for your years of service to G.A.P. Your dedicated work deserves a shining light of gratitude! |
Patty Ferrari • (December 6th, 2023) Patty is a familiar face and caring voice to everyone connected with G.A.P. Four years ago, a friend sent her a Facebook post about G.A.P.’s need for volunteers. It was during the pandemic and they both decided to join as a way of giving back to the community.
Patty began her G.A.P. volunteer work in the Thursday food program and quickly demonstrated her strong organizational and problem-solving skills. She soon moved into the G.A.P. office and is now the Office Admin Lead. She volunteers three days a week but also keeps an eye on incoming emails when she is at home. She is always ready to help anyone who calls or arrives at the office door. With her warm smile, and words of friendship, Patty truly upholds G.A.P.’s values of compassion and kindness. She says, “I love meeting new people and this work provides me with the opportunity to talk to people in the community every day.” It is no surprise that she has made many new friends through her volunteer work. Patty adds, “It feels like coming home when I come into the building each week.” We think Patty, herself, has to be credited for creating that warm, gracious atmosphere that others naturally gravitate toward. When asked how she has benefitted from her volunteer work with G.A.P., Patty responds, “I have learned new skills and gained confidence in my abilities.” She describes in detail, what the work G.A.P. is doing, means to her, “G.A.P is doing such important work in our community. We are building a safe place for anyone to come, to have a warm meal, get supplemental food, access transportation, and have an opportunity to socialize with others. Also, G.A.P. is always exploring other ways to support our neighbours by working collaboratively with community groups who share like-minded goals.” She underlines how volunteers are highly valued at G.A.P., “It’s a very friendly place and we have a lot of fun!” Patty, G.A.P. genuinely appreciates how much you give of yourself to make it that way. We are honoured to shine a bright light on your goodness. |
Barb Barrowman • (November 29th, 2023) Before she became a G.A.P. volunteer, Barb Barrowman helped at the weekly Supper Club serving dinners to neighbours in the community. She was committed to helping those in need and in G.A.P.’s early days, readily offered her assistance. Barb reflects on how gratifying it has been to watch G.A.P. grow into what it is today. “It is very well organized, with positive groups of people working together to meet multiple needs,” she remarks.
Currently packing food for the Thursday food program, Barb says that she is impressed with the many different ways that G.A.P. lends a hand to others. When asked how she, herself, benefits from being a part of a service organization, Barb responds, “I get a feeling of satisfaction helping others. I have also met a wonderful group of people to work with.” Barb, you are such a vital part of the team and G.A.P. is truly fortunate to have your whole-hearted attitude on board! Thank you for your generous spirit and the meaningful contributions you are making to the Gravenhurst community. |
Marg McLaughlin • (November 22nd, 2023) Giving generously to others is as natural as a heartbeat to Marg McLaughlin. Having grown up in Gravenhurst, she has deep roots and a great love for the community. She is a successful realtor for Muskoka Real Estate, but still makes time as both a Rotarian and a G.A.P. volunteer to help out wherever she can. She is also a busy mother and grandmother.
Thinking about her work as a weekly food delivery driver for G.A.P., Marg says. “The benefit of seeing smiles on the faces that we deliver to, makes me feel grateful.” She notes that volunteering for G.A.P. is easy, adding, “To some degree, G.A.P. encourages the community to become involved… we are neighbours.” Thank you, Marg, for saying it so well! We are neighbours helping neighbours. Your meaningful contribution is important to the lives of those who have less and it is greatly appreciated. |
Donna Gordon • (November 15th, 2023) Donna Gordon has been a dedicated G.A.P. volunteer for years. She liked what G.A.P. was providing in the community and started out helping in the kitchen prior to COVID-19 restrictions. She readily switched to delivering food hampers to ensure neighbours in need had some food security. Donna is grateful to be a G.A.P. volunteer as it gives her an opportunity to be involved in the community in a bigger way.
Reflecting on G.A.P.’s work, she says, “I think we all need to appreciate what so many people in the community are doing to support G.A.P. I like that it is a grassroots organization and benefits a large number of people in the town of Gravenhurst.” Donna also likes that there are so many volunteer jobs to choose from as well as a choice on the amount of time a volunteer wishes to give. She adds, “G.A.P. is very respectful of needs that volunteers have, to provide a service.” Donna, we are truly grateful for your kind words and for all that you do for your community. As a weekly volunteer driver, you literally keep the wheels of G.A.P. moving! |
Jennifer Dalby • (November 8th, 2023) Jennifer became a G.A.P. volunteer because she likes to give back to her community and help those in need. Each week, she loads up her vehicle with food hampers to deliver them to neighbours who are unable to drive in to pick them up. It takes time, gas, and effort but she does it willingly and with kindness.
“It just makes me feel good to help people,” she says. Jennifer thinks that it is a great thing for our community to provide others with food including fresh produce that they may not be able to afford. She adds, “It helps them to get by which is greatly needed in today’s society.” Jennifer likes the different opportunities she has had to volunteer for G.A.P. As she says, “There are many different positions…not just one thing and it’s a huge help.” A heartfelt thank you to this compassionate volunteer who keeps on giving to the community she loves. |
Tim Luke • (November 1st, 2023) Tim Luke joined G.A.P. to give back to the community he lives in. He is a Thursday food packer and driver and also loads a multitude of food hampers into the other delivery drivers’ vehicles. It is hard work but he is motivated to do it because, as he says, “Our neighbours that I deliver to are all very appreciative of the program. It makes my day to see the smiling faces of children as they ask if they can help deliver the boxes. The many thank you’s I get is all you really need to know that the work you are doing is appreciated.”
Tim adds that he is rewarded by seeing firsthand that G.A.P. really does make a difference in the community. An unexpected personal benefit is the great friendships that he is making. He is impressed with the fact that so many people give their time and experience to make Gravenhurst a better place to be. He values the compassion and understanding that G.A.P. shows to the community. When asked why others should consider volunteering with G.A.P., Tim responds, “If you would like to expand the size of your heart, G.A.P. is for you. I think every volunteer’s heart at G.A.P. grows a little larger every week. I love the fact that it is 100% volunteer-driven. G.A.P. is a very well-organized team with clear communication of its goals.” Tim, your jumbo-sized heart is beating such a tremendous amount of care for others. We can’t thank you enough for expressing it through your dedicated volunteer work. G.A.P. is so fortunate to have your friendship! |
Chris Winship • (October 25th, 2023) After five decades of spending summers in Muskoka, Chris Winship made the move to Bracebridge from Burlington. He is now happy to call Muskoka his year-round home.
For over 20 years, he was teamed up with the Scott Mission in Toronto, delivering food baskets and Christmas hampers. When he relocated here to Muskoka, he wanted to get involved with a local charity. He found G.A.P. online and we’re so glad he did! Chris delivers G.A.P. food hampers every Thursday. He often asks if he can do a second route and he willingly helps load other vehicles with their food for delivery. In other words – he’s a hard worker!! Chris says of his experience, “By being one of many dedicated volunteers, it has allowed me to give back weekly to the community in which I live and love.” He further comments on meeting many new people, whom he now considers to be friends. In considering G.A.P.’s scope, Chris appreciates how it offers so many opportunities for any one to get involved and help out those in need. We are so grateful for volunteers like Chris who think nothing of all the time and effort they give to others. Thank you, Chris, for being such a vital part of the G.A.P. team! |
David Wetherald • (October 18th, 2023) David loves to see jam-packed food hampers when he delivers to neighbours in need. Wanting to make the most of the available space in his truck, he will ask for more deliveries to transport to the rural areas of Gravenhurst.
2019, is when David was first drawn to Gravenhurst Against Poverty. Reflecting on this, he says, “It seemed like (turned out to be true) a very good grassroots organization through which I could directly help improve the lives of my neighbours.” David stepped in quickly, taking on the roles of G.A.P. Booth Market Coordinator, Food Program Lead and Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee. He played a major role in G.A.P.’s missed attempt to acquire the Ing Building to develop affordable housing units and a community hub. Four years later, he is happy to be a weekly volunteer driver. David has been involved with many charitable causes and feels a great deal of satisfaction and gratitude in helping neighbours who need assistance. In his words, “I have been fortunate in my life with numerous helping hands along the way and now it is my turn to do the same.” He believes that G.A.P. is a well-run grassroots organization that positively impacts the lives of many of our neighbours. Giving thought to why others should consider supporting G.A.P., David says, “If we each do our bit then we can make a big difference in our nice little community. And what other organization can you think of that is entirely run by volunteers?” David, we sincerely thank you for your vital leadership in G.A.P.’s early beginnings and we are also grateful for your continued volunteer work, your financial support and your ongoing encouragement of G.A.P.’s mission to reduce poverty. |
Kellie Frankish • (October 11th, 2023) Kellie Frankish was there when G.A.P. first set up a booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers Market four years ago and she was still there every week during Market season this summer.
When asked why she became a G.A.P. volunteer, Kellie responds, “Volunteering with G.A.P. is a great way to give back to my community. I wanted to do something local and was struck by how much food insecurity existed in my own town.” She describes how rewarding it is to meet and share with others what G.A.P. is doing, “I love chatting with people. It feels good, and a little scary, to do this work when the needs seem to be growing so quickly. I am very aware of how blessed I am and the fact that you never know when you will need help or support. If I ever need it, I hope that a program like this will be there for me. Lots of caring and no judgment… it is filling a large need in our community.” Kellie, you are such a vital part of raising awareness about that need. We are so happy to shine a light on your role in growing support for all that G.A.P. is doing to reduce poverty in the community. A huge, heartfelt thank you for your dedicated volunteer work! |
Maggie Cowan • (October 4th, 2023) Maggie lives in Collingwood and is a long-time cottager in Muskoka. For the last 4 years she has been greeting visitors and sharing the G.A.P. story of helping neighbours in need at the G.A.P. booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers Market.
Maggie was initially a G.A.P. donor along with her husband, John, through the Muskoka Community Foundation. G.A.P.’s Transportation Program was very grateful to receive a grant from the Cowan Family Fund. But further to that, and recognizing the important work that was being done, Maggie expressed a desire to also be involved as a volunteer for G.A.P. A retired high school teacher and grandmother of nine young artists, Maggie loves finding creative venues to explore. Her hobbies include art classes, tennis, hiking, writing and bridge. Maggie, we are so thankful you make the time in your busy schedule to give to G.A.P. and our neighbours in need. |
Joyce Bartz • (September 27th, 2023) Joyce initially volunteered with G.A.P., assisting our Garden Coordinator Sarah Meyers, with the G.A.P. Garden Program. It didn't take long to realize that Joyce displayed a great passion for listening.
Joyce would make phone calls to the 30+ garden volunteers to confirm the sites that they would take care of for the season. She also helped with the planning and organizing of the first-ever G.A.P. Garden Party. In her words, “It’s an extremely hard-working, dedicated group of people… their passion is obvious with the bounty of veggies they are able to produce.” Joyce has now become the friendly voice our neighbours hear when phone calls are made to share information about changes to programs. She loves every minute of it, saying, “I always look forward to the next project.” Joyce has not let her limitations with physical mobility prevent her from making an impact in the community. A 31-year resident of Gravenhurst, she worked part-time at both Gravenhurst Home Hardware and Gravenhurst Pharmacy. She became a member of the Royal Canadian Legion where she did extensive volunteer work, “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do and still would do if possible.” Reflecting on the importance of her G.A.P. volunteer work, Joyce comments, “While making phone calls, I have talked to many people who just need to visit and we have had some good chats. Listening to people has always been my style and it’s great therapy for me as well.” How lucky are we to have such a positive and caring volunteer in this wonderful lady? Thank you, Joyce, for being such a valued part of the G.A.P. story and family. |
Lorne VanderDussen • (September 20th, 2023) Lorne VanderDussen became a G.A.P. volunteer in 2020 during the pandemic restrictions. He wanted to provide much-needed support to neighbours in the Gravenhurst area who were finding it difficult to provide the food and transportation needs for their households.
He also joined the G.A.P. Steering Committee, and for three years, played a vital leadership role in helping to shape the organization’s growth. He just recently finished his term on that committee. Responding to what G.A.P. means to him personally, Lorne comments, “In a region that is perceived by many as a playground for the affluent, it is important to share the reality that poverty is as present in Muskoka, and specifically Gravenhurst, as it is anywhere else in Ontario. G.A.P. literally fills the gap for many of our neighbours by providing no-cost, judgement-free support at a challenging time in their lives. I would love to see G.A.P. out of business because it is no longer needed.” Lorne’s volunteer work has extended to being a greeter at G.A.P.’s Booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers Market. You will see him there every Wednesday morning during Market season. When considering the value of being a G.A.P. volunteer he says, “It is one of the most efficient organizations that I have had the pleasure to be a part of. We are staffed 100% by volunteers which means that funds raised are not going to paying salaries and wages but directly to supporting our neighbours in need, Additionally, you are going to meet some amazing people and have a great time!” Lorne happens to also be a volunteer firefighter for the Gravenhurst Fire Department. Lorne, we are truly grateful for your volunteer service to our community. Thank you for raising awareness about what G.A.P. is doing to reduce poverty in Muskoka. |
Denise & John Cooper • (September 13th, 2023) John and Denise Cooper are long-time, strong supporters of G.A.P.’s mission to reduce poverty in our community.
Each and every single week they are committed to volunteering in different ways. John delivers food hampers by vehicle to neighbours experiencing food insecurity. Denise purchases food where and when it is on sale. She also sorts incoming food rescue donations that will be distributed by G.A.P. to those in need. Together, they both also support G.A.P.’s annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) community fundraiser event. If you know John and Denise then you know of their kindness and generosity. They love to celebrate all that G.A.P. is doing while also encouraging fellow volunteers along the way. We are so lucky to have this dynamo couple sharing G.A.P.’s story and practicing meaningful volunteer work that contributes to community wholeness. John and Denise, a huge, HUGE, G.A.P. thank you to both of you for all that you do! |
Mary Jean Cline • (September 6th, 2023) Meet Mary Jean Cline. Mary Jean is a very busy G.A.P. volunteer. She supports the weekly Tuesday meal preparation, sorts incoming deliveries of donated food and helps keep the pantry organized. She helps to get a lot of essential jobs done behind the scenes that keep G.A.P. operations running smoothly. We think it’s important for us to shine a bright light front and centre on her long-time contribution to G.A.P.’s Tuesday food program.
Mary Jean talks passionately about the need in the community for this kind of service. She is quick to humbly highlight G.A.P.’s remarkable teamwork, saying, “Everyone’s effort matters. Someone suggests an idea and then another one builds on it.” When asked what she gets out of volunteering for G.A.P., her response is, “My gratification is knowing someone had a better day.” A huge thank you, Mary Jean, for your years of generous service to both G.A.P. and the Gravenhurst community. |
Maggie Keates • (August 30th, 2023) Originally from New Zealand, and now a long-time resident of Gravenhurst, Maggie Keates is a dedicated gardener and G.A.P. volunteer. She is a retired minister who believes strongly in giving back to her community.
Maggie originally volunteered for the Thursday night Supper Club which was started and coordinated by Val Ceschia at Trinity United Church and then continued that work when G.A.P. agreed to run it in 2019. Maggie also plays a big role in the G.A.P. Garden Program. She gardened at a few sites but now helps tend the seven garden boxes at the Centennial Centre. As you can see, they are flourishing under both her expertise and care! Thank you, Maggie, for believing that those who have less in our community deserve our attention. |
Marion Purvis • (August 23rd, 2023) Originally from South Africa, Marion now volunteers as part of G.A.P.’s Tuesday Food Program. She is part of our kitchen team that helps to prepare healthy meals for neighbours to pick up and take home.
Two years ago she found out about G.A.P through social media as well as our good friend and supporter at The Oar, Robbie Irvine. Marion says she has learned so much about poverty in Muskoka and the very real need to address it. In addition to the Tuesday program, she has worked in the G.A.P. Garden program at the GPS, GHS and Trinity United Church garden sites. Marion thinks that G.A.P. is an amazing organization and says, “It’s a bright shining light in my life to do this work.” She describes the teamwork as being fantastic and looks forward to it every week. Marion, we want to thank you for all that you do for G.A.P. It is such a pleasure to have volunteers like you who give to the work with such passion in your heart! |
Sylvia Crowhurst • (August 16th, 2023) Meet Sylvia. Sylvia has been a dedicated G.A.P. Garden volunteer since 2021. She is a retired massage therapist and also worked in theatre doing alterations on costumes.
Sylvia is a strong believer in community. In her words, “Supporting those in need combined with my love of gardening all came together for me to become a G.A.P. volunteer.” In fact, a few years back, when Sylvia was considering moving to Gravenhurst, she saw all of the G.A.P. garden boxes at the Centennial Centre and thought, “I’d like to live in a community that cares like this about others.” It makes perfect sense that Sylvia works at the Bethune Memorial House G.A.P. Garden where the humanitarian seed of caring for others was first planted for Dr. Norman Bethune. A heartfelt G.A.P. thank you Sylvia, for choosing Gravenhurst to live - we are so lucky you did! |
Ardyn Todd • (August 9th, 2023) G.A.P. Volunteer Spotlight: Ardyn Todd. Meet Ardyn Todd, G.A.P.’s Food Rescue Coordinator. Ardyn is responsible for a team of food rescue volunteers. Together, they pick up and deliver both surplus and purchased food every week for distribution to our neighbours in need.
Pictured here, Ardyn stands beside his grandson, Jivan Todd, who he recruited to help deliver and re-package eggs. Along with food rescue, Ardyn has worked in the G.A.P. Garden Program, hauling soil and lumber during the building phase of the boxes at multiple sites. He has also been a yearly volunteer organizer of G.A.P.'s Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising event. Ardyn, we are so grateful for your tireless service to G.A.P.’s vision and all the wonderful work you have done for our community. |
Phil Tomasetti • (August 2nd, 2023) G.A.P. Volunteer Spotlight: Phil Tomasetti. Phil Tomasetti is one of G.A.P.'s original Directors. He was there at the beginning when challenging conversations took place. That was when and where the tough questions were asked about what could be done to help so many individuals in need.
Phil attended countless organizational meetings involving G.A.P.’s purpose, mission, and initial programs. Before the pandemic, he started a pay-it-forward complimentary meal program in collaboration with The Oar Restaurant. Phil was also a part of the inaugural Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) Committee and inspired his church members to serve hot chocolate to the participating walkers. He regularly picked up rescue food for G.A.P. and in recent years, substantial quantities of pet food for neighbours to give to their furry friends. As the Minister at Gateway Church, he obtained permission for their garden boxes to be used to grow food for G.A.P. neighbours in the community. In fact, Phil was part of a team who actually built a couple of the boxes. He has helped tend the plants over the years and is always enthusiastic about their growth. Phil has recently stepped back from G.A.P.’s board of directors but he has not left his love of the work that G.A.P. does. He is always willing to take on a task and in his words, is “…only a phone call away!” What more could you ask of a dedicated volunteer? Phil, thank you for so many years of your wholehearted service. |
Hannah King • (July 26th, 2023) G.A.P. Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah King
Hannah King is G.A.P.’s Young Adult Centre (YAC) Coordinator. For over two years she has been a dedicated G.A.P. volunteer welcoming youth in the community to enjoy YAC’s various activities. Hannah says she has really appreciated seeing the growth in each of the individual youth participants as well as the bonds of friendship that have formed within the group. We think they are pretty lucky to have a leader who plans and leads great fun-filled activities for them every Friday night. Most recently, they have included beach volleyball, clay sculpting, a BBQ party with lawn games, a scavenger hunt and a board games night. Hannah has used her personal talent as an artist to lovingly encourage the young people to create paintings. She has been a constant anchor, providing a safe place where youth can be together and connect as a community. Hannah is a busy gal as she also works full-time as the Activity Coordinator at Granite Ridge. Thank you, Hannah! Your heart is big and we are grateful for all you give to the community. |
Kathy Roberts • (July 19th, 2023) Kathy Roberts is another one of our delightful volunteers who assists with preparing food during G.A.P.'s Tuesday Fresh Meal Pick-Up days. She is always willing to jump in to help wherever needed and brings a contagious smile everywhere she goes.
When not volunteering her time with G.A.P., Kathy loves to play pickleball and curling but, most of all, she loves to spend time with her precious grandbaby. Thank you, Kathy, for all you do and all you give to help others in our community. We are grateful to have you as a member of the G.A.P. family. |
Kate Frittenburg • (July 12th, 2023) Meet Kate. Kate is one of the kitchen crew volunteers for G.A.P.'s Tuesday Meal Pickup Days. Often seen with a big, bright smile, Kate is a delightful member of the team, always eager to jump in and help wherever needed. She also loves to sing while she works, which helps to keep the spirits high for everyone she works with.
In her spare time, we've heard that Kate is quite the golfer and bowler! Thank you, Kate, for all you do for G.A.P. and to support our neighbours in need. You're a volunteer superstar! |
Gerry Lawrence • (July 5th, 2023) Sadly, it is time to say farewell to another long-time, dedicated, G.A.P. volunteer who is relocating – this time to Nanaimo, British Columbia. Gerry Lawrence has been volunteering with G.A.P. for over 4 years! Every week for all of those years, he has faithfully attended G.A.P. on the Thursday food day to distribute food hampers as well as deliver food at the end of his shift.
When neighbours would arrive to pick up their food packages, Gerry was there to receive them and ensure they get the one with their name on it. He is well-known by many of our neighbours and undoubtedly, they will miss his familiar face. We sure will! Additionally, Gerry’s poverty-reduction volunteer work has also included a weekly commitment to Circles Muskoka for the past 4 years. Gerry, thank you for your personal giving as both a volunteer and a donor. We are grateful for the funds you have raised every year for G.A.P.’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser. Thank you also for participating in the annual winter walk. We will miss you and we wish you the very best on your new life adventure. P.S. We promise to keep rooting for your beloved Maple Leafs! |
Judy Campbell • (June 21st, 2023) Judy Campbell is a one-of-a-kind volunteer with exceptional talents. She has just relocated to North Bay and will be greatly missed by the Gravenhurst community. For years we have been especially fortunate to have had Judy as part of the G.A.P. family.
Willing to help out wherever she was needed, Judy volunteered in the kitchen for the Tuesday lunches and delivered hampers for the Thursday food program. She offered wisdom and encouragement as a member and vice-chair of the G.A.P. Steering Committee. Judy was a trailblazer in obtaining the Ryde school in order to establish the Ryde Co-op and that experience was very valuable to G.A.P. during its early growth and development. Her expertise as a grant writer has resulted in a great number of successful grant applications which have provided substantial funds to G.A.P. Judy, how can we thank you enough for all you have done for G.A.P.?! We wish you all the best and know, without a doubt, that North Bay has been gifted with one very special volunteer! |
Marie Little • (June 14th, 2023) A smile that can light up the room! Yes, Marie Little really is this excited to be volunteering for Gravenhurst Against Poverty! She is a great bundle of energy which she uses to do so much to help our neighbours.
Marie joined G.A.P. in April 2022 and started out by helping to pack food for the Thursday Food Program, but quickly rose to be the coordinator for that program. She then showed her culinary and leadership skills by regularly preparing both meat and plant-based meals for members of the Circles group. Most recently, Marie has taken on the huge task of organizing a team that prepares over 600 hot meals that are distributed to our neighbours on alternate Thursdays. Despite all the many hours that Marie spends at G.A.P. she still finds time for golf. In the 'off-season', she is a very active member of the curling club. Marie, you certainly are a treasure and G.A.P. is so very fortunate to have you on our team of wonderful volunteers. Thank you for all you do! |
Frances Garner • (June 7th, 2023) This week we are shining a light on the amazing work of Frances Garner. Frances only began volunteering with G.A.P. in September 2022, but boy has she ever stepped up in a HUGE way and made a big impact on G.A.P. and our community in that short time.
Frances volunteers a lot of her time with the Community Kitchen Program, teaching our neighbours the basics of cooking as well as teaching them how to prepare nutritious, plant-based meals. With the ever-rising cost of food, especially meat products, Frances guides the participants on how to prepare foods that they may never have tried before. Last week, several lucky G.A.P. volunteers were treated to a wonderful lunch prepared by the Community Kitchen class who had just completed a 6-week course. When not volunteering at G.A.P. Frances keeps very busy, especially on weekends, as an Officiant. Frances, you are an amazing, generous and kind soul who is so much fun to work with! Thank you for all you do to support G.A.P. and our neighbours. |
Kitty Nancekievill • (May 17th, 2023) When you see this beautiful smile you just know that there is a beautiful person inside. This person is Kitty Nancekievill who joined Gravenhurst Against Poverty last year. Since her arrival, Kitty has been volunteering with the G.A.P. Tuesday Food Program where she has been helping to make our neighbours feel welcome and ensures that they are able to get the food they need.
Kitty also volunteers her time at a Muskoka thrift store and loves to spend time with her family - especially her grandchildren! Thank you so much for all you do, Kitty! |
Dave & Elaine Robbins • (May 10th, 2023) This week, we are excited to shine a spotlight on Dave and Elaine Robbins.
These volunteers have been with Gravenhurst Against Poverty since the very beginning. Together as a team, they helped to prepare food all the way back when G.A.P. was serving in-house meals and are still giving their time and energy to G.A.P. all these years later by volunteering with the Thursday Food Program. They shared with us how they have a special place in their hearts for those struggling with mental wellness and how they have regularly worked to raise money to help support the neighbours in our community. For several years Dave and Elaine gave visitors to Gravenhurst a wonderful place to visit by welcoming them to their beautiful B&B on Gull Lake. Their warmth and caring hearts have made them great ambassadors for our community. If you see this cheerful couple around town please say hello, or even better, offer a big thank you for all they do to give back and help others! Thank you, Dave & Elaine! |
Jaden Hollingshead • (May 3rd, 2023) Jaden is a real asset to Gravenhurst. Among other things, he is a co-owner of a local business, a member and Director of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce and Gravenhurst BIA and he is very active in community politics and the growth of our community. Despite all his other commitments, Jaden still finds time to regularly volunteer for Gravenhurst Against Poverty.
You will find Jaden carrying heavy boxes of food up the stairs and loading them into vehicles for delivery to our neighbours. No matter what the weather, Jaden is there with a smile and a kind demeanor to help those around him. G.A.P. certainly appreciates having someone like Jaden for this job! Thank you, Jaden, for all you bring to this community and the support you give to Gravenhurst Against Poverty. |
Pete Lemoine • (April 26th, 2023) This week we are shining our spotlight on a G.A.P. Volunteer who is no stranger to volunteering! Pete Lemoine volunteers his time and expertise in many areas throughout Muskoka; such as the Gravenhurst Environmental Advisory Committee, as the Muskoka Watershed Council, as a director of the Parry Sound Muskoka Community Network and, of course, with Gravenhurst Against Poverty.
While volunteering with G.A.P. Pete will fill in anywhere he is needed. He has not only packaged food, loaded carts and made countless trips up the stairs with boxes of food but he has also loaded vehicles, done deliveries and even mopped the floors at the end of the day. Pete is humble, hard-working and wears his kind heart on his sleeve for all to see. We are so thankful for all he does for G.A.P. and for our wonderful community. You are a real treasure, Pete, thank you! |
Bob Collins • (April 11th, 2023) This week we are pleased to shine a spotlight on G.A.P. Volunteer Bob Collins.
Bob is very well known in the community and certainly has left his mark not only as a former owner of Gravenhurst Home Building Centre, but also as president of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce and as a Director for the Muskoka Community Foundation. Now, Gravenhurst Against Poverty is privileged to have Bob as a vital member of our team of fabulous volunteers supporting our youth and delivering food packages to our neighbours each week. We are immensely grateful for all that you have done and continue to do for our great community. Thank you, Bob, for all you do! |
Elaine Matthews • (March, 29th, 2023) Elaine has done an exceptional job as the lead gardener for the G.A.P. Gardens at Gravenhurst Public School and Gravenhurst High School for the past 4 years. Elaine has made a tremendous contribution to our community and in supporting our neighbours in need through the bountiful harvests of fresh produce that was distributed through G.A.P.'s various Food Programs.
While Elaine is stepping back from the lead gardener role, we are delighted to share, to say that she has agreed to stay on as a G.A.P. Garden Consultant. As a Master Gardener and a published author of a book on gardening, Elaine is perfect for this new role and we are so grateful that she will be sticking around to support the Garden Program. Elaine not only loves to spend time in the garden, but she also has a love of cooking and baking. She has often been found in the shiny G.A.P. kitchen making muffins to be shared with our neighbours. Please join us in acknowledging and thanking Elaine for all she has done for G.A.P. and our community. We are so relieved to know that you will still be there to help guide us with all of your knowledge, care and support. Thank you, Elaine! |
Kathryn McGill • (March, 22nd, 2023) No matter when or where you see Kathryn McGill you will see this infectious smile. Kathryn is a regular food delivery driver with G.A.P. and volunteers with CNOY but she is so much more.
Up until recently, she competed as a world-class rower and won gold at the World Masters Rowing Championship, along with many other top wins both in singles and with her sister Diane. She is a mother of 2, loves cycling, is a dedicated member of our local Rotary club and just loves Gravenhurst. We can't possibly say enough about Kathryn and her contributions to our community. Thank you, Kathryn, for all you do both with Gravenhurst Against Poverty and all your other passions! |
Elaine Barnes • (March 16th, 2023) Today G.A.P. is shining an appreciative spotlight on Elaine Barnes. Elaine needs very little introduction, as she is a retired teacher who taught many people in Gravenhurst over the years and she continues to pour her love and energy into giving back to the community.
Elaine has volunteered with Gravenhurst Against Poverty for several years and is always willing to help out where needed. Pictured here, she is busy packaging thousands of eggs for our neighbours. She is EGG-sactly the kind of volunteer G.A.P. needs and depends on. Thank you, Elaine, for being such a dedicated member of the G.A.P. family! |
April Humphries • (March 8th, 2023) This week's G.A.P. Volunteer Spotlight is shining bright on April Humphries.
April first connected with Gravenhurst Against Poverty through volunteering in the Coldest Night Of the Year fundraising walk last winter. This led to April joining our great team of G.A.P. volunteers. Last summer, she was a regular greeter at the Gravenhurst Farmers’ Market and now she delivers food to our neighbours each week AND has also joined the Food Rescue Team that picks up food from our local grocery stores. Let's give a BIG G.A.P. THANK YOU to April! |
Food Rescue/Pickup Team • (February 15th, 2023) This great gang of guys is part of a team that plays a vital role in making sure that each week there is food available to be distributed to those in need in the Gravenhurst area. Without them, there would not be any food to distribute to the at least 700 people a week who benefit from the food program.
Each weekday they visit many area businesses to pick up donated rescue food, or food that would otherwise go to waste. They also pick up hundreds of pounds of fresh produce and other purchased food items and transport all this into the G.A.P. packaging area at Trinity United Church. They are always on hand whenever deliveries are made and can also be counted on when there are extra tasks that require expertise or a strong arm. This fun-loving bunch can also be found around town having coffee together after the work is done so if you happen to see them please stop and say HELLO and share a big thank you for all of their dedication. 📸 Pictured left-to-right: Ardyn Todd (lead), Steve Evans, David Hammill, Mark Kittson, Al Hunter, Jim Richardson, and Don Reynolds. |
Marilyn Hook • (February 8th, 2023) This week we are shining a light on the lovely Marilyn Hook. Although it has not yet even been a full year since Marilyn joined our team of volunteers, she has contributed so much to Gravenhurst Against Poverty.
Not only is Marliyn a regular Thursday Food Program volunteer but she frequently comes to bake muffins for our neighbours in need, routinely helps to prepare delicious meals for the Circles Program and is always happy to help where ever needed. You, Marilyn, are indeed one of G.A.P.’s many treasures. Thank you for all you do to support G.A.P. and our neighbours! |
Linda Burton • (February 1st, 2023) G.A.P. first started with a conversation; it took place in the church kitchen between Linda Burton and the previous minister of Trinity United Church, Allan Lynk. Linda asked Allan what could be done for the vulnerable people in the Gravenhurst community who were coming to the church door asking for help. That conversation ignited many, many more conversations like it.
Linda strongly advocated for our neighbours in need and was successful in her appeal to the District of Muskoka for $40,000 in seed money to get G.A.P. started. The rest, they say, is history. Thank you, Linda, for demonstrating the tremendous value of conversations. We are so glad to have you back volunteering with your G.A.P. family! |
Diane Harrop • (January 25, 2023) Yes, Diane Harrop, we are so glad you are here and sharing your time, energy and big heart with G.A.P.!
Diane has been a long-time volunteer and G.A.P. supporter. Not only does she help with the G.A.P. Food Program, but you can also find this special lady volunteering with the Elderberries Choir, the Muskoka Concert Association, the Bifocals Band, Trinity United Church Choir, and, she is also the Chair of the Probus Speakers Committee. She somehow manages not only to find the time for all these things, but no matter where you find her, you can be sure that she is flashing that beautiful smile of hers and that she'll be ready to share a cheerful word with you. We are so grateful to have Diane on our team! Thank you, Diane, for who you are and for all you do to support G.A.P. and our neighbours. |
Geoff & Carol Aberdeen • (January 18, 2023) This week we would like to give a great big shoutout to a very special couple.
Geoff & Carol Aberdeen have each given so much of their time and talents to G.A.P. over the years. Here we see them helping to distribute food for our Tuesday Food Program, but they also assist with delivering food to our neighbours on Thursdays. Carol is the Secretary of G.A.P.'s Steering Committee, so she is often busy preparing minutes from many different G.A.P. meetings. Also, and maybe Carol's biggest task, is preparing the weekly spreadsheets for Thursday's Food Program. Ensuring that information flows cohesively between G.A.P.'s many food packers and delivery drivers so that food makes it to our 550+ neighbours each week is a colossal job, but Carol does it with ease. We are so grateful for everything that both Geoff and Carol do to support G.A.P. and our neighbours experiencing hardship. Thank you, Geoff & Carol! |
Judy Sherman • (January 11, 2023) Here we have another stellar G.A.P. volunteer, Judy Sherman, busy packaging eggs for distribution to our neighbours through the Food Progam. Judy has been a G.A.P. volunteer since the early days. She began volunteering in the kitchen preparing meals, which were served to those in need each week. When the pandemic restrictions prevented G.A.P. from being able to do this, Judy continued to step up and came in regularly to help package food.
We would like to give a special, heartfelt THANK YOU to Judy for all her years of service and dedication to G.A.P. and her neighbours facing hardship. Thank you, Judy!! |
Jodi Gower & Graham Millar • (January 4, 2023) Jodi is another one of our faithful drivers connected to the G.A.P. Food Program who delivers food each week to our neighbours. Delivering food has been a bit of a family affair for Jodi as both of her parents, Karl & Trudy, along with her sister, Krista, have all volunteered with G.A.P. and the delivery service.
Most recently, we are delighted to see that Jodi has brought her partner, Graham, into the G.A.P. family of volunteers! We welcome Graham and thank you both for all you do to support G.A.P. and our great community. |
Bernie Chisholm • (December 28, 2022) This volunteer is just as kind and caring as his face suggests. Bernie Chisholm is another valued member of our volunteers who comes in to help with the Tuesday Food Program.
Bernie helps prepare containers of food and other necessities for our neighbours in need who are able to come in and pick them up. He makes people feel welcome with his encouraging ways and helps them manage their containers. Your G.A.P. family thanks you, Bernie, and truly cares about you and yours. Thank you! |
Maxine Wheeler • (December 21, 2022) Today we are shining a light on Maxine Wheeler, who is a regular member of the Tuesday meal-making team. She is just a bundle of energy who loves to keep busy and will help with anything that needs to get done. Maxine is eager to learn more about G.A.P. and all of the services that G.A.P. provides. She is a great asset to our team of volunteers!
Please join us in thanking Maxine for all she does to support our community and in wishing her a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you, Maxine! |
Barb Holtz • (December 14, 2022) Today we are shining a bright spotlight on a very hardworking volunteer!
Barb Holtz has been a faithful volunteer for several years with Gravenhurst Against Poverty. Barb comes in each week to assess what rescue food is available, comes up with a plan for a nutritious hot meal, and then she and our Tuesday team of volunteers prepare it together. This food is then given out, along with other items, to those who can come in and pick up their food every Tuesday from Trinity United Church. Barb's dedication, compassion for others and positive demeanor are all contagious and she positively affects everyone she works with. We are so grateful for all that Barb has done and continues to do for both G.A.P. and our neighbours in need. Please join us in thanking Barb for her kind heart and all of her hard work! |
Bruce Dart • (December 7, 2022) This legend right here has been volunteering with G.A.P. since its inception more than FIVE years ago. Each week Bruce schedules over 20 volunteers who deliver food to our neighbours in need both in town and in rural areas of Gravenhurst.
Then, every Thursday, in the heat of summer or the freezing temps of winter, you can find Bruce outside of Trinity United Church loading food packages into vehicles for delivery. Bruce’s calm manner and composure always leave you feeling that everything is under control and getting done in a timely fashion. He's always eager to help when called upon and has a heart the size of a transport trailer. Thank you so much Bruce for all you do to support G.A.P. and our great community. |
Sandra Gleeson • (November 16th, 2022) Sandra is one of our regular weekly volunteers at Trinity United Church. She is often found preparing and packing food for our neighbours who are able to come in and pick up their food boxes and bags. Sandra has such a warm, friendly demeanor and is such a pleasure to have as part of our G.A.P. Team.
Thank you Sandra for all that you do to support our great community! |
Martine Brouillet & Chuck Murray • (November 9th, 2022) Martine and Chuck are pictured here loading up their vehicle with food packages that they deliver to neighbours in need who live in the Kilworthy area. Martine & Chuck have only been volunteering with G.A.P. for a few months, but in that time, have been such a wonderful asset to the G.A.P. team. They regularly come in on Thursdays to help pack food packages and then do deliveries.
Thank you Martine & Chuck so so much for all you do to support our community! |
Irma Salminen • (November 2nd, 2022) Irma first connected with G.A.P. about volunteering during the early stages of the COVID pandemic. The number of neighbours who were in need and were enrolling in the G.A.P. Food Program was rising and Irma stepped up during that challenging time. She has now been a faithful, hard-working G.A.P. volunteer for over three years.
Now, Irma is the first smiling face our neighbours see when they come to pick up food every Tuesday from the Trinity United Church. We are so grateful for Irma's contributions to G.A.P. and to our community. Her positive energy and kindness to others are contagious. Thank you, Irma! |
Liz & Bryan Etter • (October 26th, 2022) This dynamic duo has been making food deliveries every Thursday for the past few years. Delivering weekly food packages to those enrolled in the G.A.P. Food Program has been a vital support for our community. Bryan and Liz know the neighbours on their route and are always happy to help out.
Bryan & Liz love Muskoka and the great outdoors and have both been such a perfect fit for our team. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and very much appreciate having such willing and caring volunteers who we and our neighbours can count on week after week. Thank you Bryan and Liz for your hard work, dedication and kind hearts! |
Mariane Sayers • (October 19th, 2022) This week would like like to thank and celebrate the amazing contribution to G.A.P. and our community by Mariane Sayers.
Mariane was a great helper with the Garden Program this summer and along with her daughter Sophia, also helped as a runner on food days. Mariane is now a regular during the Thursday Food Program that helps to support over 500 individuals in our community each week who are faced with food insecurity. Please join us in thanking Mariane for her wonderful kindness and generosity. Thank you, Mariane! |
Lynne Briden • (October 12th, 2022) This kind, smiling sweetheart deserves a big THANK YOU for all she does not only for G.A.P. but for the community as a whole. Lynne has volunteered in just about every kitchen in the area. If there are meals to be prepared, Lynne generously gives her time and talent to help.
For G.A.P., Lynne not only helps prepare the Tuesday meals but she also delivers meals to our neighbours in need every Thursday. It is stellar volunteers like Lynne who make G.A.P. programming possible. Thank you, Lynne! |
Rob Haag • (October 5th, 2022) Rob Haag is a volunteer who brings sunshine and a big smile every time he enters a room. He is from B.C. but spends his summers in Muskoka and is a regular volunteer with the G.A.P. Food Program. He is always willing to do any task that needs to be done for the Thursday food packaging and delivery and also helps out with the Gravenhurst Farmers’ Market booth.
Rob has certainly become part of the Gravenhurst community. When he is not helping out with G.A.P., you may find him out in his kayak, down at the beautiful Muskoka Wharf with his friends playing their ukuleles or cycling around the area. Rob, we will certainly miss you when you return to the west coast. Thank you for all you do for G.A.P. and our community and please come back again next year! |
Tim Luke • (September 28th, 2022) Tim Luke joined the G.A.P. community this past Summer. He is a seasonal resident who has so much energy that he just never stops helping!
Tim jumps right in there to pack food boxes, run them up the stairs to the waiting delivery cars and will even be found delivering food to those in need. In his spare time, Tim calls in to see if help is needed at the G.A.P. booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers' Market. When Tim is not volunteering with G.A.P., he enjoys a game of golf or another passion of his: fishing at the cottage. Thank you for sharing your energy and enthusiasm with us, Tim! We are so grateful for all of your tremendous support and hope to see you again next summer!! |
Bryant Stora • (September 21st, 2022) Bryant is a teacher who volunteers after school during the school year and volunteers every week during the summer.
He is always eager to jump in to help wherever there is a need. This is proven by the fact that he has been seen packing food bags, loading carts, carrying packages of food to cars and even delivering food to our neighbours! To top it all off, when a volunteer was needed to help paint an office room for G.A.P., Bryant was right there with supplies in hand and a cheerful smile on his face. Thank you so much Bryant, for all you do for G.A.P. and for our neighbours in need. |
Michael Inman • (September 14th, 2022) Michael has been volunteering with G.A.P. for almost a year. He has been a big help with the Food Program - assisting with packing & running food packages as well as helping to take out garbage and recycling. Michael has also helped with the G.A.P. Booth at the weekly Gravenhurst Farmers' Market and the G.A.P. Booth at RibFest this past August.
Michael is always eager to help and tells us that he volunteers with G.A.P. because it's a great way to give back. He says he loves to meet new people and share their stories. We are tremendously grateful for all of your wonderful hard work and energy, Michael. Thank you for all you do to support G.A.P. and our neighbours in need. If you see Michael out and about, be sure to say hello and thank him for his efforts! |
Rhonda Porter • (September 7th, 2022) Rhonda has been the Team Captain of 'Trinity Trekkers' in the past three Coldest Night of the Year fundraising events. She has done a wonderful job rallying her teammates and raising valuable resources for our neighbours in need.
That's not all... Rhonda has also been volunteering with G.A.P. for the last two years, assisting with the Food Program and the G.A.P. booth at the Gravenhurst Farmers' Market. Rhonda tells us that her favourite part about volunteering with G.A.P. is meeting so many new people at the Farmers' Market and being able to tell them about all the G.A.P. programs. We asked Rhonda why she volunteers with G.A.P. and she said it was because she saw a need in the community and wanted to find a way to contribute towards addressing it and giving back. Well, we're extremely grateful to Rhonda for all of her tremendous effort over the last few years in supporting G.A.P. Please join us in thanking and celebrating Rhonda! |
