Wellness Program
|
Wellness & Mental Health were identified during G.A.P.'s 2020 & 2018 Needs Assessment Surveys as areas of concern within Gravenhurst and the surrounding community. G.A.P. is working towards developing programs that address these areas of concern. G.A.P. currently has five Wellness Programs: Coffee Time Social, YAC Hangouts, Art Drop-In, Men's Drop-In Lunch and the Community Kitchen Program. G.A.P. Wellness Program: A Look Back...
Gravenhurst Against Poverty established a Mental Health Committee and maintained a working Mental Health Sub Committee since 2019. This committee was spear-headed and developed to contribute toward a community desire of mental wellness through all determents of health.
Through 2019, the working group focused in on listening to arising needs from community members asking for a multidisciplinary service center to be established in Gravenhurst. Through 2020, G.A.P. worked towards further understanding the needs of young adults within the community in correlation to the original service center project.
Within the Mental Health Sub Committee, in 2020, an additional service project was formed. This project was in association with Canadian Mental Health Association Muskoka- Parry Sound Branch. The project quickly took on the title, Building Community Compassion Speaker Series. Within this project, G.A.P. has hosted several speakers on multiple topics, such as Poverty, Addictions and Mental Health Stigma.
In 2021, G.A.P. launched a virtual 'hangout' series called YAC Virtual Hangouts for local youth ages 12-18. The monthly series included activities like Trivia, Scavenger Hunts, Painting, Bingo, Pet Fashion Shows, Mask-Making, Slime-Making and more. G.A.P. volunteers delivered free snacks and all of the supplies needed to participate ahead of each virtual hangout.
In April of 2022, G.A.P.'s YAC Virtual Hangouts transitioned into In-Person Hangouts. This was in an effort to move closer towards G.A.P.'s vision of a dedicated community hub and young adult centre. Activities for youth have included Bagel-Making, Painting, an Epic Escape Room activity (in collaboration with Gravenhurst Public Library) and more.
Through 2022 and 2023 G.A.P. has continued to expand the Wellness Programming to include a Community Kitchen Program, Coffee Time Social, an Art Drop-In and a weekly Men's Lunch.
